Occupational Wellness

Let’s talk about work/life balance for a few minutes, shall we?

This is a subject near and dear to our hearts, because we both try to balance work with family. We both work full time outside the home, for now, and try to create quality time with our families. Most of us work in order to pay for the things we find essential to life. A home, cars, clothing, food, pretty basic sounding stuff. But if you are spending all your time on working in order to make the money that pays for these things, do you have time to spend with family and friends? It’s a tough question and something I have been thinking long and hard about for the last few years.  I (Kate) , have been at the same place for the last 26 years. (Gasp!) I started working there while I was still in college and just never left. I never really had any great ambitions regarding a “career”, but in the last few years I have been dreaming about doing something a little more meaningful with my life. We went broke trying to have kids, and that did not work out for us, so it is now just the two of us and two sets of aging parents. As we catch up on all our debt, I’ve begun seriously thinking about leaving my job, finally. It is a really tough decision, seeing as I have become accustomed to the life style that my working full time provides us, but the only thing I had ever wanted out of life was my own family, i.e. kids.  Since that didn’t really work out for us, I am forced to think about what I want to do with the rest of my life. Scary thought. I’m finally ready to make some lasting changes in my work/life balance.

There are a lot of people who love their careers, and they are happy with how their life is going. If you are one of the lucky ones who loves what they do and are really good at it, that’s awesome. But for those who feel trapped and don’t have enough time to do the things you would like to spend more time doing, let’s talk.

No matter what you do for a living, don’t forget to actually live. The reality of everyday life is that we all need an income. And if you are anything like us, you like your stuff ;o).  There are many ways to generate income, including a 9-5 job. There are many different options for everyone out there, and if you feel you need a change at any time in your life, make one. Please do plan ahead and make sure all your ducks are in a row before you walk in to work and tell them to take this job and put it where the sun don’t shine. Take the time to plan a new life for yourself and your loved ones. Being happy leads to success in whatever you do, and that feeds your happiness. Lets make 2016 the year that we all evaluate where we are in our lives, and if we aren’t happy, put some work into making positive changes in our lives.
